Does this make anyone think of something I could try? One thing I did notice is that there is about a half minute from the time I start executing my shell script to the time when org.h2.tools.Server seems to be launched ("Server" appears on the menu bar). I didn't bother trying to connect to the database or do the SELECT statement. And as mentioned above, launching the console took just as long as detailed in my first post.
