![]() ![]() They’ve already started building her replacement, but the older Enterprise was his ship, and Maverick has no interest in the new one. It was the project that first got him interested in test piloting, and though he missed a few years of development by going back to active duty, he’s put everything he has into it for the last thirteen years, ignoring the three be spent terrorising the Enterprise before she was decommissioned. He’s so proud of the Darkstar program, been involved every step of the way. He’s ready for this, he’s ready to show them what they’ve built. “You okay?” Ice’s voice interrupts his musings about the past and Maverick sighs, tilting his head back to look at the stars. He gave him his own space to retreat and Maverick was never so grateful for his husband. He even bought a brand new Airstream so Mav could stay at the hanger. Ice had bought him the place to keep his P-51 and the excessive collection of motorcycles he’d collected over the years. When they pulled up at a deserted old hanger after four hours Mav just raised his eyebrows and went to look around. Ice just smirked, and reached for his hand, not joining in when Maverick started belting out 80s hits, but tapping along anyway. He took risks he shouldn’t have, pushed limits that weren’t meant to be pushed. He’s the only reason Maverick is still in the Navy, after all.Īfter Bradley left he went down a hole, a bad one. Ice doesn’t always agree, but he still supports him at every turn. Careful is not a word that ever seems to apply to Maverick, but he likes to think he’s toned down over the years. “I’ll be fine,” he says softly, smiling when Ice huffs. They’re scheduled to start prep at noon the next day with the flight takeoff for just before sunset at 1800. ![]() He’s pulled one of the chairs outside the hanger and is enjoying the sky clear of all light pollution, stars shining like they never do in San Diego. Maverick chuckles, glancing up at the stars. “Be careful,” Ice tells him on their call, the last one before Maverick turns his phone off for the evening and gets in the headspace for the flight. ![]() He’s confident in tomorrow’s Darkstar test, he think’s they’ll hit Mach 9 with no problems, she’s been steady every flight before and never let him down. Maverick always spends the night before a test flight in the hanger, and this time is no exception.
